Fans of the legendary English punk band, the Sex Pistols, are in for a treat when they perform at The Joint, their only U.S. stop during their 2008 summer tour. Formed in London in 1975, Sex Pistols are one of the most definitive rock bands of all time and are widely credited with initiating the punk movement. Sex Pistols had emerged as a response to what was perceived to be the increasingly stale music scene of the mid-1970s. Sex Pistols were controversial but captivating, and although their shows repeatedly faced difficulties from Government authorities, their fans remain loyal. Some of the tracks they are recognized for include, “God Save the Queen” (1977), “C’mon Everybody” (1979) and “Pretty Vacant” (1977), all of which are included on their classic studio album Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols.

American rock band from Poway, Calif., Unwritten Law is most notable for their singles, “Seein’ Red” and “Save Me (Wake Up Call),” both of which entered the top 5 in the US Modern Rock charts. Their most recent release is a “best of” album titled The Hit List, which came out in 2007. The process of selecting tracks for The Hit List was simple in that whatever fans requested the most at shows made the cut. The album is a compilation of Unwritten Law’s favorite dysfunctional valentines, starting with three tracks from early efforts “Blue Room,” “Ozz Factor” and “Superman.” Unwritten Law never stays in one formula nor do they conform to what anybody else may think the band should sound like. Over the years of being together, Unwritten Law have learned to play by their own rules and make music from a pure place rather than a place where they were trying to be a part of something

The spirit of aloha is alive and well with the three young, innovative minds that make up the reggae-rock group, Pepper. With musical influences including Nirvana, Black Sabbath and Pantera, Pepper is recognized for their live performances and culminating rich, sincere relationships with fans.

Camila is a Mexican pop group which reached staggering success in their home country and all over Latin American upon the release of their debut album, Todo Cambio. Band members include Mario Domm, Reyli and Kalimba. Their first single titled, “Abrazame” became a major airplay success even before the group chose a name for themselves. It reached Mexican Top 10 and U.S. Latin Top 30. In late 2006, Camila was nominated for “Best New Artist” at the Premios Lo Nuestro awards. “Todo Cambio,” Camila’s third single, was released in March 2007 and quickly surpassed “Abrazame,” becoming the group’s most significant single to date. In June 2007, the album was certified platinum and gold, selling over 150,000 copies in Mexico alone. Earlier this year, Camila won two Premios Lo Nuestro awards for “Song of the Year” for “Todo Cambio” as well as “Group or Duo of the Year.”

The members of As I Lay Dying (AILD) are the kind of musicians that refuse to be measured solely by their most recent accomplishments. The new album, An Ocean Between Us, is evidence of this fact, proving once again that these guys are not afraid to push the limits of their sound and always keep things moving. The music grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until the album’s finish. Singer, guitarist and songwriter Ani DiFranco is known for being a prolific artist whose released nineteen albums since her debut in the music industry. DiFranco is also seen as a women’s rights activist and a feminist icon, and in 2001 she received the “Woman of Courage Award” at the National Organization for Woman (NOW) Conference and Young Feminist Summit in Albany, N.Y. DiFranco’s guitar playing is often characterized by a signature staccato style, rapid finger picking and many alternate tunings. Her lyrics often include alliteration, metaphor, word play and a hint of irony. Her music has been classified as both folk rock and alternative rock and has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Prince, Utah Phillips, Maceo Parker and Corey Parker.

An evening with Mark Knopfler

Artist originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Mark Knopfler is one of the original members of the group Dire Straits.  Known for being a talented guitar player, singer, songwriter and film composer, Knopfler has had a great appeal amongst fans for over three decades.  He’s collaborated with numerous music icons including Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Tina Turner, Steely Dan, David Rawlings and others.  The recipient of countless awards and accolades, Knopfler’s gruff vocals and elegantly burnished Fender guitar tone have carried him through his years of musical success.  Knopfler began his solo career in 1996 with the release of his first album, Golden Heart.  His latest album released late 2007 is titled Kill to Get Crimson.

Rightly recognized as true pioneers of live hip-hop, the Geneva, NY-based band Gym Class Heroes has won popular and critical acclaim for kicking out genre-busting jams that seamlessly meld rap, rock, R&B and anything else that happens to strike the musically voracious outfit’s fancy. With their new album release, As Cruel as School Children, Gym Class Heroes have stepped up their game on every level. Songs such as the witty MySpace anthem, “New Friend Request,” explode out of the speakers with a rollicking sonic irreverence ideally suited for the hazy days and hot nights of summer. Their new album is marked by its diverse grooves and warm, organic textures. Gym Class Heroes took inspiration from an array of dissimilar artists, spanning from dark sonic provocateurs Interpol and Radiohead to pop power balladeers such as Phil Collins and Hall & Oates. Returning to the FNL stage, Steel Pulse is the Grammy winning reggae band that’s remained close to their roots and have continued their commitment to fighting justice, educating the masses and promoting positive messages through their spiritually uplifting music.

The sextet from Pittsburgh, Rusted Root is a polyrhythmic, multicultural rock and soul band that’s always made it a conscious effort to not let anything interfere with the beautiful collaboration of music they are known for creating. This is Rusted Root’s second time on the FNL stage.

Best known for their eclectic sampling, quirky surreal lyrics and contributions to the jazz-rap subgenre, De La Soul returns to the FNL stage. De La Soul possesses clever rhymes and goofy humor, drawing their musical influences from old school rap, pop, funk and soul.

Grammy-nominated and former prodigy instrumentalist Jonny Lang speaks often with his guitar in the language of deep blues and searing rock and roll. Since the age of 15, he stands as a mature creative force whose music often reveals the hard times and chaos in his life that have toughened him up for future endeavors.

Young singer/songwriter from Scotland, Paolo Nutini, has garnered a huge fanbase with his soulful, passionate voice and the natural gift of being able to tell a story in a song. Over the years, Nutini has absorbed the sould of the great American R&B singers and channeled it into something original, captivating and dynamic. Nutini has been singing since a small child, and at 16 he hit the road to travel with a friend’s band. His bold voice created an instant buzz, and he was signed on with Atlantic Records shortly after his 18th birthday. His album These Streets released brought the release of his first single titled, “Last Request,” which made a stunning top five debut on the British charts. It was certified platinum a few weeks later. A truly charismatic live performer, Nutini has supported superstars including Paul Weller and the Rolling Stones. He’s shared the stage with icons such as Solomon Burke, Robert Plant and Kid Rock. Since the US release of his album These Streets, Nutini’s journey has taken him to new and unexpected places.

Starting out as two devoted disciples of earlier soul greats, Hall & Oates are soul survivors in their own right. After more than forty years of knowing each other, Daryl Hall and John Oates are very much at the height of their powers making their own kind of soul, with a new generation of musicians recognizing not only their historic track record of success, but also their continuing influence and achievements. Hall & Oates have toured consistently and with considerable success around the world, they’ve continued to record both together and separately with impressive results including Hall’s third solo album, Soul Alone. Most recently, Hall & Oates saluted their deep soul roots with 2004’s Our Kind Of Soul – an album that found them recording inventive re-workings of some of their favorite soul classics like the Spinners’ “I’ll Be Around” and the Four Tops’ “Standing in the Shadows of Love,” as well as three new originals with a decidedly classic soul feel, “Let Love Take Control,” and “Don’t Turn Your Back on Me”. 2004 also saw Hall & Oates’ body of work inducted together into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.
